Addressing early symptoms of back and neck pain, Work Related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULD also known as RSI – repetitive strain injury), headaches, muscular tension, reduce the likelihood of them becoming long-lasting and resulting in recurrent work absences. This improves the health, well-being and morale of the working population and results in costs savings for companies.
Élan’s occupational physiotherapy service provides a range of assessments that can be tailored to your company’s requirements, depending on quantity of employees that are to be assessed and the complexity of each individual case:-
1) A one-to-one full DSE workstation and posture analysis, anthropometric measurements taken with typed report and product recommendations where necessary. This is suggested if it is a chronic, long-standing condition and/or if there has been a history of prolonged or repeated sickness absence - £150 each
2) A 30-minute assessment and handwritten checklist report, with posture advice and verbal and/or online product recommendations where necessary - £35 each, minimum of four employees.
3) Group seminar on best practice in DSE workstation set-ups and manual handling in accordance with EEC regulations e.g. Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 to enable employees to self-correct own set-up - £150 + individual checks (Option 2) at £35 each if less than 4, £25 each if 4-9, £20 each if 10 or more.
These assessments can take place in a range of diverse settings including:
• Public, Voluntary or Private sector
Option 3 involves a short 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation with brief explanation why it's important to pay attention to how we position ourselves at work, whatever the job. If being given to people who sit at a computer, I'll then focus on what is the current evidence-based best advice to set up a PC workstation as well as including other tips to manage any work aggravated pain. A section on manual handling and correct lifting advice can also be included. If there is anything that is not covered here that is required to be targeted for specific company needs, the presentation can made more bespoke.
Occupational physiotherapy can typically produce a return on investment for an organisation of £3 for every £1 spent.
Work Place Assessments
Workplace assessments have become an important aspect of most companies’ health & safety policy. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are one of the costliest health problems for business in the UK. The Health and Safety Executive estimates the cost of MSD to the UK society is £5.6 billion with 11.6 million lost working days. Prevention and efficient onsite management of such conditions could save businesses money, reduce absence and ensure a happy, healthy workforce.
